APO FEEDS THE HOMELESS

WRITTEN BY AYESHA MAHOMED

On Saturday, Feb. 7, I along with my fellow brothers from Alpha Phi Omega had the opportunity to help feed the homeless at the Morning Glory Cafe.

To start, we worked in meal prep and then helped prepare bags for take-away meals. While serving the lunch, there were a few things in particular that stood out to me, the first being that many of the homeless did not take apples. Several explained that they were physically unable to bite into them due to a lack of dental care.

In hindsight, this shouldn’t have been surprising. Yet it’s something I wasn’t expecting to see. While it’s unfortunate to witness, it’s a reality.

Also, a lot of people rejected certain foods because they knew they wouldn’t eat it and it would just go to waste. Conversely, others took food they didn’t like because they knew someone else who would. It’s that kind of mindfulness that really helps put our own problems into perspective. In truth, we could have it a lot worse.

Everyone was very respectful and it was apparent how grateful they were, which was refreshing to see. Overall, the experience was eye-opening. It made me realize, even more so than ever before, that we should be grateful for the things we are given because not everyone is fortunate enough to be in the same position.
