Sock it to Homelessness: Socktober 2016 kicks off

You can feel it in the air, that crisp greeting of fall. A season full of pumpkins, warm drinks and cozy nights — but for some it’s got a darker side.

On any given night, over half a million people are experiencing homelessness in the United States. As winter approaches, cooler temperatures can be unbearable and sometimes even deadly for those without the proper resources. So are you ready to make a difference this season?

Socktober is a great way to start and here’s how you can help:

  • Sign-up here and we’ll arrange a homeless shelter for you to partner up with. Then throughout the month of October, collect new pairs of socks and any other clothing item you wish to donate. We’ll then make arrangements for you to drop off the donations.
  • Get your church, office or school in on the collection. You can collect for the entire month or just one week, but the more the merrier.
  • Tell your friends and share the word on social media. We’d love sharing your photos too, so e-mail them to [email protected] or tag us on Facebook.

Did you know that socks are the most needed item for homeless shelters, but one of the least donated? That’s why Socktober is so important and that’s why we’re determined to break last year’s record of 687 pairs.

With our current partners — the Boy Scouts Heart of America Council, the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri and VinSolutions — and help from the community, we plan on making that happen. Will you join us?
