Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

WRITTEN BY LAUREN FRECHIN

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is Monday, January 18. This national service day was initiated by Congress in 1994 with the aim of transforming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day into a day that embodies his teachings of nonviolence and social justice. Since then, millions of people have come together each year to strengthen their communities and honor Dr. King.

Join The Call KC’s “Flash Volunteer Outing” as we come together to spruce up Ermine Case, Jr. Park (located in the Quality Hill Neighborhood at 803 Jefferson Street, Kansas City, MO 64105). Volunteers will meet at the Louis and Clark statue for instructions and supplies. We will provide trash bags but ask that you bring your own work gloves. PLEASE NOTE: Originally schedule for Monday, Jan. 18, this outing will be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Stay tuned for info.

You can also sign up to volunteer to read stories about civil rights and social justice to students as part of Rosedale Development Association’s Reading Inspirational Stories to Empower(RISE) program, January 19-22. This special program, which takes place every year during the week of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, helps connect students and community members through stories and creative literature.

RISE volunteers are required to attend a training session from 6-8 p.m. on January 14, at 1401 Southwest Blvd. in Kansas City, KS. The training includes guest speakers that will help volunteers prepare for discussions with students the following week.

If you are interested in volunteering for either of these events, please contact us at [email protected].
