How volunteering improves your well-being

WRITTEN BY LAUREN FRENCHIN

January feels like a holiday withdrawal. We recover from a whirlwind of giving, gathering and fun, and ring in the new year with resolutions. What better way to continue the season of cheer than by volunteering in your community?

Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer searching for your next cause or you’re new to the giving scene, volunteering is a great way to boost the winter blues.

In fact, researchers have found giving to charities activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust, creating a “warm glow” effect. Scientists also believe volunteering releases endorphins in the brain that produce the positive feeling known as the “helper’s high.” In addition, volunteering has been linked to lower blood pressure and reduced stress levels, as well as decreased feelings of loneliness and depression.

When you help others, you’re also helping yourself. So grab your friends, family, or even your coworkers, and make plans to volunteer with us in 2016. We’d love to have you join us as we change the world for the better through our hearts, our minds and our service. The community will be better off–and you may live a happier, healthier life because of it. Contact us for more information.
