Support needed for the 3rd Annual New Mark Community Service Fair

The 3rd Annual New Mark Middle School Community Fair on Dec. 6, 2019 will expose over 900 students to service organizations in the area. Through this expo experience, the North Kansas City School District students are able to learn about social services and needs in their community as well as how they can get involved.

This is highly beneficial for their upcoming graduation requirements, scholarship needs, college applications, church and family outings, personal usage and more.

For the past three years, New Mark Middle School teachers have partnered up with Uncover KC to provide community service curriculum and experiences for their AVID students. The program crescendos with an end-of-the-semester fair that the students plan and manage themselves. It’s takes anywhere from 5-7 months of work but the payoff impacts so many people — AVID students, the entire New Mark student population, North Kansas City School District community partners, nonprofits, teachers, parents and families.

Like any major event, numerous supports are needed for success. Local donors, including Thrivent Financial members, can provide up to $250 in seed money for several event costs such as marketing materials, raffle prizes, programming costs and logistical needs like tables, posters and handouts.

Supporters are also encouraged to participate in the planning and growth of the fair as much as they’d like. This can include advising/mentoring the students as they plan and develop the fair; reaching out to local community leaders and partners to participate; assisting with prep and day-of-event needs and more.
