Discovery Education Program Surpasses 70,000 Service Hours

Uncover KC’s Discovery Education Program provides service-learning programming, off-campus volunteer outings, and in-class projects or speakers for students from elementary through high school. Our programming works to build leadership skills, self-awareness, community involvement, sense of belonging, and ability to reflect, while developing practical skills such as project management, professional communication, and presenting.

UKC’s programming is tailored to the age group and interests of each individual class or student. With younger students, UKC staff work with classroom teachers to determine social issues of interest. We then send monthly programming with information, resources, and instructions for a project that addresses the chosen issue.

For an elementary classroom interested in animals, for instance, UKC sends programming that includes information and videos about animal wellbeing, as well as directions for creating and donating dog toys to a local animal shelter.

Older students are encouraged to choose a social issue they care about and develop a service learning project to address the issue. UKC helps students refine ideas, provides resources to guide students through their projects, and connects students with nonprofit organizations that can help their projects succeed.

Previous projects include the creation of a school garden where crops were given to the school cafeteria, and a community closet where students could go if they were in need of a coat on a chilly day or business wear for an interview.  Reach out to Uncover KC to get your school started with the Discovery Education program and make an impact on your community!
