Love to Cook? Volunteer at Thelma’s Kitchen
Enjoy cooking? Want to help Kansas City communities?
Then come volunteer at Thelma’s Kitchen!
Kansas City’s first donate-what-you-can café, Thelma’s Kitchen is located downtown at 31st and Troost Ave. Volunteers can help make healthy, made-from-scratch, comfort foods for the community.
The kitchen is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteer shifts are available from 8 a.m to 3 p.m. and last 2-4 hours.
90%of the staff at Thelma’s Kitchen are volunteers.
Thelma’s Kitchen is a gathering place where everyone is welcome. Anyone can drop by and order a meal. The suggested donation for a large plate is $12 and $9 for a small plate.
Popular dishes from the menu include: Fried Pork Tenderloin, Sausage & Peppers, Famous Potato Cheddar Soup and Spring Berry Salad.
Volunteering during Covid-19
And don’t worry, they’ve taken precautions to ensure the health and safety of guests and volunteers:
-
Volunteers will need to complete a health questionnaire and have their temperature taken when they arrive.
-
The cafe and kitchen was closed in June for a deep clean.
-
Staff, volunteers, and clients are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing while in the building.
-
A hand washing station is available for guests outside the front door and ample hand sanitizer is available in the cafe.
-
There is limited seating available and every table and chair will be cleaned after each guest leaves.
-
To-go meals are currently available at the counter and there will soon be a to-go window for curbside pickup.

About Thelma’s Kitchen
Started by Thelma “Matushka Michaila” and her husband, Father Alexii Altschul, Thelma’s Kitchen began thirty years ago to feed hungry neighbors. Today, it’s a healthy communities initiative of Reconciliation Services, a nonprofit whose mission is to transform Troost from a dividing line into a gathering place, revealing the strength of all.
