UKC Now Hiring: Director of events

Organization Summary: Formed in April 2013 by two friends searching for genuine impact, Uncover KC (UKC) focuses on building bridges between those who want to improve their community and those who need help doing so. Since that launch, UKC has recruited over 53,000 volunteers and helped them complete more than 113,000 service hours, leading to $2.8 million in valued impact for local organizations. This collective impact is made possible through our civic engagement services and programs.

 

Position Summary: For this multi-site and multi-program organization, the Director of Events has an external facing role that oversees our signature fundraising events. There is a heavy emphasis on people skills, community outreach, event planning and management plus establishing standards of performance across all services provided.

 

Job Type: Independent Contractor

 

Compensation: $1,500-2,000 per event with 5% commission for every $2,000 raised

 

Responsibilities:
Event Planning

  • Oversee the structure and execution of signature fundraising events in a timely manner.
  • Lead community outreach and communications for event needs.
  • Manage weekly updates surrounding event management needs.
  • Schedule and facilitate vendor contracts for the organization. UKC will hold all contracts with vendors and prepayments if needed.
  • Schedule and manage appreciation efforts with attendees and vendors including thank you cards and phone calls following events.
  • Maintain evaluation procedures and service metrics for costs spent, attendance, overall funds raised and more.
  • Provide consistent updates to other UKC staff for marketing, sponsorship, sales and donor purposes.
  • Assist with sponsorship and sales cultivation as needed.
    Work with the UKC president to meet event needs.

 

Supervision/Management

  • Lead community outreach and communications for event needs.
  • Create and maintain an accurate vendor database.
  • Schedule and lead event planning and management meetings.
  • Provide consistent updates to other UKC staff for marketing, sponsorship, sales and donor purposes.
  • Send out follow-up surveys and appreciation communications.
  • Maintain evaluation procedures and event metrics.

 

Team Leadership

  • Attend monthly event committee meetings as needed.
  • Provide timely communications to assigned committee volunteers.
  • Provide consistent updates to other UKC staff for marketing, sponsorship, sales and donor purposes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the UKC President.

 

Qualifications & Characteristics:

  • High school diploma or higher preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience in event planning, management or services required; community organizing or nonprofit fundraising experience highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and Google Apps such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Meets, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of event planning and management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated individual with creative problem-solving skills; detail-oriented and task-focused.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines.
  • Displays good judgment, takes initiative and is eager to learn as much as to teach.
  • Responsive to direction and feedback; comfortable working in a collaborative environment.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for UKC’s mission.

 

Work Environment:

  • This position operates primarily in a professional, collaborative office environment that is fully accessible.
  • This role uses standard office equipment (e.g., computers, phones, copiers, scanners).
  • The position is required to talk, hear, stand and walk, and to handle, feel and reach.

 

Work Schedule and Benefits:

  • $1,500-2,000 per event with 5% commission for every $2,000 raised
  • $25 per hour (estimated 80 hours per event)
  • The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. though work is a hybrid of remote and location-based.
  • Occasional early morning or evening meetings plus weekend work depending on event commitments, as well as occasional travel in the Kansas City region.
