Kansas City in June: Artists Celebrating Pride and Juneteenth

Summer is finally here in Kansas City! The patios are open, First Fridays are back, and there’s some optimism that things could be returning to pre-covid normalcy. However, as you begin to make plans for sunny months, we would like to highlight some diverse cultural events happening soon.

This June, we are excited to celebrate both Pride Month and the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.   Below are a few events in the metro area where you can find artists, musicians, and other creatives celebrating these events and where and when you can join the festivities.

The InterUrban ArtHouse, in Overland Park, Kansas, is hosting 2022’s Queer Experience from June 17th until July 29th. Featuring shows and artwork by members of the LGBTQIA community, everyone is welcome to attend and experience works created from and represented by queer perspectives. The initial reception is on June 17th, from 5 to 8 pm. On June 24th, there will also be a drag and performance showcase, the Rainbow Experience, from 8 to 9:30 pm.

Also, June 19th is Juneteenth – a celebration of the end of human slavery in America. There are too many events happening that weekend to list here (you can find all the events, and more information about the holiday which celebrates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, at JuneteenthKC’s online calendar).

In keeping with our theme of the arts, here are two performative events celebrating black culture:

Also, if you happen to be in the 18th and Vine district during Juneteenth weekend and are looking for something to do during the day if you haven’t been before, we suggest you head over to the  Black Archives of Mid-America, get some coffee at their shop, and view the exhibits while you’re waiting.

If you’re looking for a way to help out your community and volunteer this month, you can search for Upcoming Events on our website, which we always keep up to date.

We hope you have fantastic new experiences in June, and please make sure to help support local artists and musicians. Have fun and be safe!
