Preparing for Hispanic Heritage Month: Strengthening Allyship with the Latinx Community

With Hispanic Heritage Month just weeks away, this is the perfect time to relefct on how we can strengthen our allyship with the Latinx community — especially given the vital role they play in Kansas City. With over 30% of KCPS (Kansas City Public Schools) and 60% of KCKPS (Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools) students identifying at Hispanic or Latinx, and more than 9,600 Latinx-owned businesses contributing to the metro area, it’s clear that the Latinx community is essential to the very fabric of our city.
Yet, despite these significant numbres, Latinx representation in leadership positions and community organizations remains disproportionately low. This is a reality that many of us in the nonprofit sector must confront, and Uncover KC is no exception. Even within our own organization, where we strive for inclusivity, we notice and imbalance — while we’re proud to have diverse gender representation (22 female identifying and 17 male identifying), both groups are still predominately white.
This lack of representation is not quite unique to us, but it does call for reflection. As we analyze our internal culture and broader community connections, we must ask ourselves: How can we become better allies to the Black, Brown, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented communities in Kansas City? How do we ensure we are amplifying the voices, businesses, and cultures of these groups — especially during key moments like Hispanic Heritage Month, and beyond?
Moving Beyond Performative Allyship
Please know that we are still doing the work internally to understand what True Allyship looks like for us as an organization. But by leaning on the insights of our community partners and stakeholders, here’s what we’ve learned so far. True allyship requires more than a few well-meaning words or one-time actions. It requires continuous education, self-reflection, adn adaptation. We must challenge our preconceived notions and open ourselves to understanding the live experiences of others. And most importantly, allyship requires action — not performative gestures, but real, sustained effort that makes a tangible difference.
As we approach Hispanic Heritage Month, here are some ways we hope to engage in meaninful allyship with our Latinx community:
1. Attend Cultural Events
One of the most powerful ways to connect with and appreciate the Latinx community is by immersing yourself in their culture. Take the time to attend cultural events like the Ethnic Enrichment Fest, Dia De Los Muertos celebrations, or other Latinx heritage events. These gatherings offer an opportunity to learn, experience traditions firsthand, and show support for the community in a visible, positive way. The beauty of culutural celebrations is that they create a shared space where appreciation and understanding naturally flourish.
2. Educate Yourself:
Education is key to effective allyship. Many of us may not be fully aware of the historical and present-day challenges that the Latinx community faces. By educating ourselves — thorugh reading books, attending lectures, and staying informed about the issues affecting the community — we can better understand the complexities of Latinx identities and histories. Education also allows us to be more intentional in our efforts, ensuring that our support aligns with the actual needs of the community rather than assumptions.
3. Speak Up:
Silence often perpetuates injustice. As allies, we must be prepared to use our voices to uplift and defend marginalized communities. Wheter it’s in our workplaces, social circles, or broader public forums, speaking up against discrimination and inequality can build trust and foster stronger relationships. By standing up for the Latinx and other underrepresented communities, we not only help to combat harmful stereotypes and practices but also create a sense of safety and solidarity.
4. Invest Locally:
Investing in local businesses and community organizations is a powerful way to support the Latinx community. Whether you have time to attend events or not, your dollars can make a significant impact. Latinx-owned businesses contribute to the local economy and offer products, services, and experiences rooted in their unique cultural perspectives. When you invest in these businesses — whether by making purchases or donating to Latinx-led nonprofits — you are contributing to the vitality of the community. Beyond financial investment, offering your time an energy as a volunteer is equally impactful. Not only does this provide direct support to those who need it, but it also helps foster a sense of shared responsiblity and care within the community.
Beyond Hispanic Heritage Month
While Hispanic Heritage Month is a powerful reminder to celebrate and honor the Latinx community, our efforts should not be confined to a single month of the year. Allyship is an ongoing journey that requires consistent attention and effort. It’s about creating deeper connections, understanding diverse experiences, and fostering a more inclusive andequitable environment — both within our organizations and in our broader communities.
The Latinx community in Kansas City is a vital foce that contributes to the cultural, economic, and social well-being of our region. As allies, our roles is to ensure that their voices are heard, their businesses are supported, and their contributions are values — not just during Hispanic Heritage Month, but every day of the year. So, as we prepare for this month of celebration, let;s commit to being more intentional in our actions, more thoughtful in our words, and more inclusive in our approach to building a stronger, more equitable Kansas City.
Our call to action is clear: strengthening our commitment to allyship and solidarity to produce meaningful action. We hope you will join us in this effort of making space for deeper conversations, not just offering a seat at the table but a microphone, and continuing to elevate the voices of those who have been historically underrepresented.
