Lead to Read KC

Impact

To support the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by advancing our literacy platform and mobilizing community volunteers. Why? Fewer than half of Kansas City, Missouri third graders are reading on grade level. In many high-need schools, it’s fewer than 25 percent. Children who are not reading by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Lead to Read KC is addressing this challenge.

Dozens of students are waiting to be paired with a caring adult volunteer, and students need reading and mentoring support now more than ever. School closings and remote learning have resulted in tremendous learning loss among children attending high-need schools. These are the children we serve. As a Lead to Read KC Reading Mentor, you can help a student catch up by volunteering one lunch hour a week. Choose from in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities on a day and time that suit your individual schedule.
